ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (NABL) Certification for Soap detergent & Toiletries

Soap detergent & Toiletries
Soap Detergents and Toiletries are one of the basic needs in today’s world. When it comes to personal hygiene, the soap is inevitable part of it. From cleaning body to cleaning clothes, the soaps and detergent play an important role. Earliest records of use of soaps can be traced way back to 5000 years ago when the people of Babylon used it. The soap making techniques are also mentioned in some of the ancient roman text that date back to around 2000 years back.
Modern day soap and detergent making techniques are quite advanced and efficient yet the use of the soap and detergent is pretty much the same.
Most of the people use the words soap and detergents interchangeably but there is a significant difference between the two. Let’s see what is the different between the two.

Chemical differences
The main difference between soap and detergents is that the soaps are made from natural ingredients such as vegetable oils or animal fats such as coconut oils, palm oil and so forth. On the other hand, the detergents are synthetically produced derivatives of several chemicals that have cleaning properties.  The applications of soap are limited whereas the detergents can be applied for any number of cleaning applications. The most common ingredients of detergents are surfactants. Surfactants are the ingredients that help in cleaning process by decreasing the surface tension of the water and allow the water to spread in an even manner over it.

Behaviour in Water
Both detergents and soaps have different behaviours in water. The soap needs to be washed from clean water or it will leave a film over the surface on the other hand the detergents are self-rinsing products hence don’t need any clear water wash. Additionally, the soap does not perform well when it comes to hard water but detergents can work fine in both hard as well as soft water. When contacted with hard water, soap produces scum that is not good for the surface.
Due to its versatility to work in different water conditions, the detergents are most preferred when it comes to commercial cleaning. The configuration and properties of the detergents can be adjusted according to the requirements and the nature of the surfaces where they are applied hence detergents are more viable cleaning option than soaps in commercial cleaning. They can be formulated as alkali, acidic, or neutral. Further different ingredients such as enzymes can be added to detergents to increase their effectiveness.

As the soaps and detergents are used in extensive applications and also they are used by humans, they can be harsh to the human skin. Additionally, there are chemicals used in manufacturing of soap, detergents and toiletries, they can also have a negative impact on environment if not used carefully. This is why, the manufacturers need to test their products before they supply them to the market to ensure their quality as well as safety. These tests need to be performed in a laboratory that is certified for its accuracy and effective test data. For this, lab must be certified for ISO 17025: 2017 which is a standard set for laboratories by ISO. This ensures that the lab is undertaking all the prescribed procedures and is capable enough to provide accurate test data.
