Leather processing
When you take the leather from the animal is body, you cannot use it right away. It will have smell, different marks on the surface and many other limitations hence the leather needs to be processed properly before it is used for production of any product.

Processing leather is a very lengthy and complicated process that includes various stages. The first stage is preparatory stage where there are several procedures performed on the skin obtained from the animal corpse. Soaking of the skin is done to wash and rehydrate the skin. Liming is done to get rid of any unwanted proteins. Liming also helps in opening up of the skin. Un hairing is done to remove the majority of hair on the leather. Subcutaneous materials are removed through fleshing. In addition to that, there are bleaching, bating, degreasing, frizzing, pickling and de pickling.

After the preparatory stages comes the tanning stage. During the tanning process, the natural proteins of the raw skin in to stable materials that cannot putrefy further and can be used for various applications. There is a vast variety of tanning materials and methods used for tanning of raw skin. The most commonly used tanning material is chromium that is used by leather tanners worldwide. For tanning, the pH of the skin is reduced to the acidic level and then it is soaked in the tanning agent for a significant amount of time. Once the penetration of the tanning agent is evenly done in the skin, the acidic level of the skin is increased towards the basic side.

After tanning comes the crusting process. During the crusting process, the skin is thinned, and lubricated. Mainly the crusting process is done drying of the skin and it makes it soft as well. After this the leather can be used for various productions.
